Chapter fourteen

Sienna

"Well, I, for one, think the Crown Prince is devilishly handsome," a low voice murmured to my left as I stared down at my reflection in the empty silver plate before me.

"I'm kind of hoping Will might notice me," another said with a giggle that rang out over the clang of silverware and chatter.

All two dozen or so of us were seated in the Great Hall for lunch, and, for now, it was just us. No men sniffing around and staring at us like we were animals in a zoo. That alone should've been cause for celebration. What with the exquisite-looking butter-poached lobster and miniature teacakes, along with the fact that none of us had gotten murdered yet, it should've been a banner day.

Instead, I was a bundle of nerves and stress and anger.

The fear still hadn’t left me after being busted by the General. He could have killed me. He’d even closed the distance between us, pinning me to Havoc. Instead . . .instead he’d just stared at me and, for once, I’d been at a loss for words.

"What about you, Sienna? Which of the men would you like to get the attention of?"

I looked up to find the handful of women seated closest to me waiting expectantly for my answer.

I blinked as I addressed Holly who had posed the question.

"You mean of the bloodsucking creatures who had a hand in having us kidnapped from our homes, thrown in pens, and then auctioned off like cuts of beef, which one would I give a rose to?" I asked with a fake smile. "Let me think." I paused and cocked my head like I was considering it deeply, and then frowned. "You know what? I'm going to take a hard pass on any of them this time, but thanks for asking."

Holly turned a ruddy shade of red as the other girls stared at me in stunned silence.

Part of me knew I was out of line for being snarky with them. They were in the same horrible spot I was, with little in the way of hope, and even less in the way of choices. But I'd had a rough night and even a rougher morning. My arm throbbed, I’d barely slept, and I'd walked into this luncheon already drained from my encounter with the General.

I’d wanted to see if I could find another way into Werewolf Territory, a path that was not used like the bridge.

And what had I gotten?

Too much testosterone and a deep desire to touch his stupid face.

As much as I wanted to treat the other girls with kindness no matter how silly their chatter got, diplomacy was beyond me at the moment.

"You realize that if you don't get selected by someone, you'll die."

These stark words were spoken by a raven-haired beauty directly across from me and I regarded her silently for a long moment. I dredged through my sleep deprived brain for her name. Anya.

I locked eyes with her. "I guess that's the problem. A part of me still feels certain there are things far worse than death.
